Hymn 343 Prepare the Royal Highway

1 Prepare the royal highway;
The King of kings is near!
Let every hill and valley
A level road appear!
Then greet the King of glory,
Foretold in sacred story;

Refrain
Hosanna to the Lord,
For he fulfills God’s Word!

2 God’s people, see him coming:
Your own eternal king!
Palm branches strew before him!
Spread garments! Shout and sing!
God’s promise will not fail you!
No more shall doubt assail you! (Refrain)

3 Then fling the gates wide open
To greet your promised king!
Your king, yet every nation
Its tribute too may bring.
All lands will bow before him;
Their voices join your singing: (Refrain)

4 His is no earthly kingdom;
It comes from heaven above.
His rule is peace and freedom
And justice, truth, and love.
So let your praise be sounding
For kindness to abounding: (Refrain)

Readings for the First Sunday in Advent

Isaiah 64:1-9

Oh that you would rend the heavens and come down,
that the mountains might quake at your presence—
 as when fire kindles brushwood
and the fire causes water to boil—
to make your name known to your adversaries,
and that the nations might tremble at your presence!
When you did awesome things that we did not look for,
you came down, the mountains quaked at your presence.
From of old no one has heard
or perceived by the ear,
no eye has seen a God besides you,
who acts for those who wait for him.
You meet him who joyfully works righteousness,
those who remember you in your ways.
Behold, you were angry, and we sinned;
in our sins we have been a long time, and shall we be saved?
We have all become like one who is unclean,
and all our righteous deeds are like a polluted garment.
We all fade like a leaf,
and our iniquities, like the wind, take us away.
There is no one who calls upon your name,
who rouses himself to take hold of you;
for you have hidden your face from us,
and have made us melt in the hand of our iniquities.

But now, O Lord, you are our Father;
we are the clay, and you are our potter;
we are all the work of your hand.
Be not so terribly angry, O Lord,
and remember not iniquity forever.
Behold, please look, we are all your people.

1 Corinthians 1:3–9

Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.

I give thanks to my God always for you because of the grace of God that was given you in Christ Jesus, that in every way you were enriched in him in all speech and all knowledge— even as the testimony about Christ was confirmed among you— so that you are not lacking in any gift, as you wait for the revealing of our Lord Jesus Christ, who will sustain you to the end, guiltless in the day of our Lord Jesus Christ. God is faithful, by whom you were called into the fellowship of his Son, Jesus Christ our Lord.

Mark 11:1–10

Now when they drew near to Jerusalem, to Bethphage and Bethany, at the Mount of Olives, Jesus sent two of his disciples and said to them, “Go into the village in front of you, and immediately as you enter it you will find a colt tied, on which no one has ever sat. Untie it and bring it. If anyone says to you, ‘Why are you doing this?’ say, ‘The Lord has need of it and will send it back here immediately.’” And they went away and found a colt tied at a door outside in the street, and they untied it. And some of those standing there said to them, “What are you doing, untying the colt?” And they told them what Jesus had said, and they let them go. And they brought the colt to Jesus and threw their cloaks on it, and he sat on it. And many spread their cloaks on the road, and others spread leafy branches that they had cut from the fields. And those who went before and those who followed were shouting, “Hosanna! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord! 10 Blessed is the coming kingdom of our father David! Hosanna in the highest!”

Hymn 332 Savior of the Nations, Come

1 Savior of the nations, come,
Virgin’s Son, make here Your home!
Marvel now, O heav’n and earth,
That the Lord chose such a birth.

2 Not by human flesh and blood,
By the Spirit of our God,
Was the Word of God made flesh —
Woman’s offspring pure and fresh.

7 From the manger newborn light,
Shines in glory through the night.
Darkness there no more resides;
In this light faith now abides.

8 Glory to the Father sing,
Glory to the Son, our King,
Glory to the Spirit be
Now and through eternity.

Hymn 353 Jesus Came, the Heavens Adoring

1 Jesus came, the heav’ns adoring,
Came with peace from realms on high;
Jesus came to win redemption,
Lowly came on earth to die;
Alleluia! Alleluia!
Came in deep humility.

2 Jesus comes again in mercy
When our hearts are worn with care;
Jesus comes again in answer
To an earnest, heart-felt prayer;
Alleluia! Alleluia!
Comes to save us from despair.

3 Jesus comes to hearts rejoicing,
Bringing news of sins forgiv’n;
Jesus comes with words of gladness,
Leading souls redeemed to heav’n.
Alleluia! Alleluia!
Hope to all the world is giv’n.

4 Jesus comes in joy and sorrow,
Shares alike our hopes and fears;
Jesus comes, whate’er befalls us,
Cheers our hearts and dries our tears;
Alleluia! Alleluia!
Comforts us in failing years.

Prayer of the Church    First Sunday in Advent (B)

29 November 2020

For unashamed hope in the Lord’s return, that sustained by His Holy Spirit, we may have joy at the advent of Christ, our Savior, let us pray to the Lord: Lord, have mercy.

For the Church as she enters another Church Year, that God would enrich His saints in every way, let us pray to the Lord: Lord, have mercy.

For all Christians, that called into the fellowship of God’s Son, we would be sustained in our hope as we wait for the revealing of our Lord Jesus Christ, let us pray to the Lord: Lord, have mercy.

For husbands and wives, that they would live in love and service to each other; for fathers and mothers, that they would bring up their children in the fear and instruction of the Lord; and for all children, that honoring their parents, they would be well equipped for service to their neighbors in this life, let us pray to the Lord: Lord, have mercy.

For our governing authorities, that peace and order would be preserved in our nation; for all civil servants as well as all newly elected officials; and for a spirit of unity and cooperation among the people of our land and the nations of the world, let us pray to the Lord: Lord, have mercy.

For all those in any danger, trouble, sickness or need for an end to the pandemic; and for those who mourn, that they would hope confidently in the resurrection, let us pray to the Lord: Lord, have mercy.

Into Your hands, Father, we commend all for whom we pray, trusting in Your mercy; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.
