Hymn 523 O Word of God Incarnate

1 O Word of God incarnate,
O Wisdom from on high,
O Truth unchanged, unchanging,
O Light of our dark sky:
We praise You for the radiance
That from the hallowed page,
A lantern to our footsteps,
Shines on from age to age.

2 The Church from You, dear Master,
Received the gift divine;
And still that light is lifted
O’er all the earth to shine.
It is the chart and compass
That, all life’s voyage through,

A lamp of burnished gold

Old Testament Reading: Isaiah 51:4–6

⁴ “Give attention to me, my people,
and give ear to me, my nation;
for a law will go out from me,
and I will set my justice for a light to the peoples.
⁵ My righteousness draws near,
my salvation has gone out,
and my arms will judge the peoples;
the coastlands hope for me,
and for my arm they wait.
⁶ Lift up your eyes to the heavens,
and look at the earth beneath;
for the heavens vanish like smoke,
the earth will wear out like a garment,
and they who dwell in it will die in like manner;
but my salvation will be forever,
and my righteousness will never be dismayed.

Epistle: Jude 20-25

²⁰ But you, beloved, building yourselves up in your most holy faith and praying in the Holy Spirit, ²¹ keep yourselves in the love of God, waiting for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ that leads to eternal life. ²² And have mercy on those who doubt; ²³ save others by snatching them out of the fire; to others show mercy with fear, hating even the garment stained by the flesh.

²⁴ Now to him who is able to keep you from stumbling and to present you blameless before the presence of his glory with great joy, ²⁵ to the only God, our Savior, through Jesus Christ our Lord, be glory, majesty, dominion, and authority, before all time and now and forever. Amen.

Holy Gospel: Mark 13:24–37

²⁴ “But in those days, after that tribulation, the sun will be darkened, and the moon will not give its light, ²⁵ and the stars will be falling from heaven, and the powers in the heavens will be shaken. ²⁶ And then they will see the Son of Man coming in clouds with great power and glory. ²⁷ And then he will send out the angels and gather his elect from the four winds, from the ends of the earth to the ends of heaven.

²⁸ “From the fig tree learn its lesson: as soon as its branch becomes tender and puts out its leaves, you know that summer is near. ²⁹ So also, when you see these things taking place, you know that he is near, at the very gates. ³⁰ Truly, I say to you, this generation will not pass away until all these things take place. ³¹ Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will not pass away.

³² “But concerning that day or that hour, no one knows, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father. ³³ Be on guard, keep awake. For you do not know when the time will come. ³⁴ It is like a man going on a journey, when he leaves home and puts his servants in charge, each with his work, and commands the doorkeeper to stay awake. ³⁵ Therefore stay awake—for you do not know when the master of the house will come, in the evening, or at midnight, or when the rooster crows, or in the morning— ³⁶ lest he come suddenly and find you asleep. ³⁷ And what I say to you I say to all: Stay awake.”

Hymn 348 The King Shall Come When Morning Dawns

1 The King shall come when morning dawns
And light triumphant breaks,
When beauty gilds the eastern hills
And life to joy awakes.

2 Not as of old a little child,
To bear and fight and die,
But crowned with glory like the sun
That lights the morning sky.

3 Oh, brighter than the rising morn
When Christ, victorious rose
And left the lonesome place of death

Prayer of the Church         Last Sunday of the Church Year                    

21 November 2021

Most merciful God and Father, give Your Holy Church throughout the world Your grace to serve You with reverence and awe, granting us faith to endure to the end. Lord, in Your mercy, hear our prayer.

Heavenly Father, You know all our anxieties and fears. Grant to those troubled in mind and spirit the strength to cast every care on You. According to Your will, give them quietness of heart and a firm trust in the mercy You have shown us in Christ Jesus. Lord, in Your mercy, hear our prayer.

Place the lonely in the family of Your Holy Church, O Lord, that they may find peace in Christ and fulfillment in loving service to their neighbor. Lord, in Your mercy, hear our prayer.

Make the leaders of our nation to walk in the way of justice and truth, that they may use the power vested in them to protect the weak and innocent. Lord, in Your mercy, hear our prayer.

In the face of natural disasters, wars, famines and troubles of all kinds, fill our hearts with repentance and humility, that in every circumstance we may trust in You. Lord, in Your mercy, hear our prayer.

Look with favor on all who are in need. Fill the hungry with good things. Give the poor and unemployed gainful employment. Heal the sick, [especially _____________,] comfort those who mourn and watch over all who travel. Be near the dying. Give courage to those who suffer oppression and want. Defend all orphans and widows, and protect the weak, the unborn and the aged. Lord, in Your mercy, hear our prayer.

We give thanks for all who have departed this life in faith. As we see the signs of our Lord’s second coming, grant that we would not lose heart, but be faithful unto death and receive the crown of life. Lord, in Your mercy, hear our prayer.
