Hymn 699 I Heard the Voice of Jesus Say
1 I heard the voice of Jesus say,
“Come unto Me and rest;
Lay down, thou weary one, lay down
Thy head upon My breast.”
I came to Jesus as I was,
So weary, worn, and sad;
I found in Him a resting place,
And He has made me glad.
2 I heard the voice of Jesus say,
“Behold, I freely give
The living water; thirsty one,
Stoop down and drink and live.”
I came to Jesus, and I drank
Of that life-giving stream;
My thirst was quenched, my soul revived,
And now I live in Him.
3 I heard the voice of Jesus say,
“I am this dark world’s light.
Look unto Me; thy morn shall rise
And all thy day be bright.”
I looked to Jesus, and I found
In Him my star, my sun;
And in that light of life I’ll walk
Till trav’ling days are done.
Palm Sunday/Sunday of the Passion
Old Testament Reading: Isaiah 50:4-9a
The Lord God has given me
the tongue of those who are taught,
that I may know how to sustain with a word
him who is weary.
Morning by morning he awakens;
he awakens my ear
to hear as those who are taught.
5 The Lord God has opened my ear,
and I was not rebellious;
I turned not backward.
6 I gave my back to those who strike,
and my cheeks to those who pull out the beard;
I hid not my face
from disgrace and spitting.
7 But the Lord God helps me;
therefore I have not been disgraced;
therefore I have set my face like a flint,
and I know that I shall not be put to shame.
8 He who vindicates me is near.
Who will contend with me?
Let us stand up together.
Who is my adversary?
Let him come near to me.
9 Behold, the Lord God helps me;
who will declare me guilty?
Epistle: Philippians 2:5-11
5 Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus, 6 who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, 7 but emptied himself, by taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men. 8 And being found in human form, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross. 9 Therefore God has highly exalted him and bestowed on him the name that is above every name, 10 so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, 11 and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.
Holy Gospel: Matthew 26:1-27:66
… 38 Then two robbers were crucified with him, one on the right and one on the left. 39 And those who passed by derided him, wagging their heads 40 and saying, “You who would destroy the temple and rebuild it in three days, save yourself! If you are the Son of God, come down from the cross.” 41 So also the chief priests, with the scribes and elders, mocked him, saying, 42 “He saved others; he cannot save himself. He is the King of Israel; let him come down now from the cross, and we will believe in him. 43 He trusts in God; let God deliver him now, if he desires him. For he said, ‘I am the Son of God.’” 44 And the robbers who were crucified with him also reviled him in the same way.
45 Now from the sixth hour[o] there was darkness over all the land until the ninth hour. 46 And about the ninth hour Jesus cried out with a loud voice, saying, “Eli, Eli, lema sabachthani?” that is, “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?” 47 And some of the bystanders, hearing it, said, “This man is calling Elijah.” 48 And one of them at once ran and took a sponge, filled it with sour wine, and put it on a reed and gave it to him to drink. 49 But the others said, “Wait, let us see whether Elijah will come to save him.” 50 And Jesus cried out again with a loud voice and yielded up his spirit.
51 And behold, the curtain of the temple was torn in two, from top to bottom. And the earth shook, and the rocks were split. 52 The tombs also were opened. And many bodies of the saints who had fallen asleep were raised, 53 and coming out of the tombs after his resurrection they went into the holy city and appeared to many. 54 When the centurion and those who were with him, keeping watch over Jesus, saw the earthquake and what took place, they were filled with awe and said, “Truly this was the Son[r] of God!”
55 There were also many women there, looking on from a distance, who had followed Jesus from Galilee, ministering to him, 56 among whom were Mary Magdalene and Mary the mother of James and Joseph and the mother of the sons of Zebedee.
57 When it was evening, there came a rich man from Arimathea, named Joseph, who also was a disciple of Jesus. 58 He went to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus. Then Pilate ordered it to be given to him. 59 And Joseph took the body and wrapped it in a clean linen shroud 60 and laid it in his own new tomb, which he had cut in the rock. And he rolled a great stone to the entrance of the tomb and went away. 61 Mary Magdalene and the other Mary were there, sitting opposite the tomb.
62 The next day, that is, after the day of Preparation, the chief priests and the Pharisees gathered before Pilate 63 and said, “Sir, we remember how that impostor said, while he was still alive, ‘After three days I will rise.’ 64 Therefore order the tomb to be made secure until the third day, lest his disciples go and steal him away and tell the people, ‘He has risen from the dead,’ and the last fraud will be worse than the first.” 65 Pilate said to them, “You have a guard of soldiers. Go, make it as secure as you can.” 66 So they went and made the tomb secure by sealing the stone and setting a guard.

Hymn 442 All Glory, Laud, and Honor
Refrain:
All glory, laud, and honor
To You, Redeemer, King,
To whom the lips of children
Made sweet hosannas ring.
1 You are the King of Israel
And David’s royal Son,
Now in the Lord’s Name coming,
Our King and Blessèd One. [Refrain]
2 The company of angels
Is praising You on high,
And we with all creation
In chorus make reply. [Refrain]
3 The multitude of pilgrims
With palms before You went:
Our praise and prayers and anthems
Before You we present. [Refrain]
4 To you before Your passion
They sang their hymns of praise;
To You, now high exalted,
Our melody we raise. [Refrain]
5 As You received their praises,
Accept the prayers we bring,
O Source of ev’ry blessing,
Our good and gracious King. [Refrain]

Hymn 560 Drawn to the Cross, Which Thou Hast Blessed
1 Drawn to the Cross, which Thou hast blessed
With healing gifts for souls distressed,
To find in Thee my life, my rest,
Christ crucified, I come.
2 Thou knowest all my griefs and fears,
Thy grace abused, my misspent years;
Yet now to Thee with contrite tears,
Christ crucified, I come.
3 Wash me and take away each stain;
Let nothing of my sin remain.
For cleansing, though it be through pain,
Christ crucified, I come.
4 And then for work to do for Thee,
Which shall so sweet a service be
That angels well might envy me,
Christ crucified, I come.
Prayer of the Church
Sunday of the Passion 5 April 2020
Let us pray for the Church, that she may be defended against all enemies, be kept from error and be made bold to proclaim the Gospel of Jesus Christ without fear:
Almighty God, as once the people welcomed Your Son with palms and hosannas, grant to us Your Spirit so that we may welcome with faith Him who comes in the name of the Lord. Grant us grace so that we may make known Jesus Christ and Him crucified here and throughout the world, that Your Kingdom may come and Your saving will and purpose may be done; through Jesus Christ, our Lord.
Amen.
Let us pray for those who teach and those who learn God’s Word and for the Spirit to bring to completion all that He has begun in Baptism so that we may all be found blameless when Christ returns in His glory:
Almighty God, You grant growth to Your Church, and You bring to fruit all that You have begun within Your people. Help us to keep focused upon the word of the cross, for it is the power of our salvation and the Word that endures forever; through Jesus Christ, our Lord.
Amen.
Let us pray for our leaders, for those who defend us near and far, and for our own good citizenship:
Almighty God, You have set apart the nations, and You hold our leaders accountable for all that they do. Give us wise, faithful and honest leaders who will protect your people and work according to Your will. Bring an end to sickness and fear, and foster Your healing and peace among the nations and within our own land. through Jesus Christ, our Lord.
Amen.
Let us pray to the Lord that all disasters, adversity and trouble may end and that the sick and those who suffer may be granted health and peace:
Almighty God, Your Son bore all our weakness, sin and death in His body, that we may be granted grace sufficient for all our needs. Hold us in Your hand, bind up our wounds and deliver us from all our needs, that we may know Your perfect peace; through Jesus Christ, our Lord.
Amen.
Finally, let us pray boldly and give testament to our fervent prayer and confident hope with the amen of faith; through Jesus Christ, our Lord, who lives and reigns with the Father and the Spirit, one God, now and forever.
Amen.
